Sprinkled with layers of neo-soul and smooth R&B, Down Bad Patrol sets Nganeko’s unmistakable vocal to a lush and dreamy soundscape, which takes the listener on a serene journey and delivers a refreshing sound, which showcases a unique and unforgettable talent.
“The song is about me defining the difference between clarity and desperation, or the expectation for clarity, with people I love. It’s about recognising the process for what it is, which for me was the process of learning HOW to love someone whilst taking care of yourself,” says Nganeko.
“And reminding myself that I can do it. Looking within and out. Learning how to take a break and breathe. Learning from trials and errors and taking it easy on myself,” she adds.
Nganeko wrote Down Bad Patrol with the dynamic writing/production duo Parks and B. Haru, best known for their impeccable work with New Zealand’s very own Ladi6.
“Working with Parks and Brandon is bliss. It never feels rushed, it’s chill and I really respect their craft so it’s never a dull moment for me when I’m in session with them whether we’re speaking or not,” says Nganeko.
Down Bad Patrol is accompanied by imagery shot by the critically acclaimed fashion photographer/director Apela Bell, assisted by Ally Lase. Their astute creative vision provides the perfect aesthetic and backdrop for the track’s silky sonics.
“I’m very grateful for these individuals for being a part of this journey with me. For the cover and promo shots in particular, I aimed to do a look that was as enticing - simple but still impactful as I feel that the song is too.”
This is Nganeko’s first release for several years. It follows previously released songs Serious and Facade which provided just a small taste of her immense talent. She has also collaborated with a host of well-known New Zealand acts, including Church & AP, Troy Kingi and most recently with Leaping Tiger.
Stay tuned for more from Nganeko in the coming months.
