Danica Bryant reads the cards in her new music video for 'Libra'

03 October 2023 - 0 Comments

Danica Bryant (she/her) is a songwriter and producer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington).

Bryant crafts effortless pop music that delivers fun, catchy hooks that are always centered by an emotional core. Bryant has had many early wins, releasing two EPs (2020’s Cider, and 2022’s Ego Death), supported Elton John in 2020 at the Mission Estate Winery and being mentored by Bic Runga as a part of Smokefree Rockquest. Danica was an early adopter of
TikTok and has amassed over 19K followers and over 2.7M likes in just under two years.

Since the release of Libra earlier in the month Bryant completed her tour of Aotearoa, the track has amassed thousands of streams on streaming services and placed in the
NZ Hot Singles chart. Today she shares the NZ On Air funded music video for Libra where she indulges in the Y2K era aesthetics, that’s fun yet satirical.

Drawing on influences from Y2K fashion and modern astrology aesthetics, the video is a vibrant fusion of planetary motifs and iconic 2000's fashion reminiscent of figures like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The video for Libra serves as a testament to Danica's creative vision and commitment to self-expression.

"I wanted the Libra music video to tell a story about someone making judgements about others unfairly, based on their star sign," says Bryant. "In the video, my character receives the lyrical 'prescribed future' in the form of tarot cards from a mystery Libra, but she decides to take that future back into her own hands by coming up with her own tarot response and satirical song."

Libra was a two-day shoot directed and produced by Caitlin Robinson, with Kaylib McCartney directing photography and editing. "The clip was very influenced by 00's fashion and modern astrology aesthetics. We made so many moodboards of planetariums and witchcraft, alongside all the 2000s it girls outfits. I love colour so we upped the saturation for something bright and eye-catching too, I was living my pop star fantasy! "

Now that the video is out, Bryant expressed her gratitude for the support she received, acknowledging the contributions of her team. She stated, "I think this video expands on the story Libra tells beautifully, and it's thrilling to aesthetically represent my identity through this clip. It's so exciting to release my first full music video where I've been able to fully execute my vision!"
