Music News - Smashproof And Susan Boyle Top 2009 RIANZ Charts
19 December 2009 - 0 Comments
South Auckland trios Smashproof broke into the record books with the longest running local number one single this year, and the run has seen them also become the highest selling single of the year.
At the other end of the musical spectrum, reality TV and YouTube sensation Susan Boyle also smashed records – selling the most albums in one week of anyone this year, and also topping the album sales charts with ‘I Dreamed A Dream’.
The top New Zealand album of the year is
Fat Freddy’s Drop’s “Dr Boondigga And The Big BW” at #4.
The RIANZ Top 40 Album Chart is based on physical and digital retail sales while the RIANZ Top 40 Singles Chart is compiled based on a 75:25 split between physical / digital singles sales figures and radio play information.
It was a sales explosion for 48-year-old
Britain's Got Talent runner-up Susan Boyle when her debut album
I Dreamed A Dream shipped more than 45,000 units to stores on presales in New Zealand making it the fastest seller of 2009.
Local hip-hop act Smashproof entered the chart at #23 in late January with ‘Brother’ from their debut album ‘The Weekend’. The trio of Tyree, Young Sid and Deach teamed up with vocalist Gin Wigmore for the hit song.
‘Brother’ took top honours in its fifth week after waiting patiently in the runners-up slot for the previous two. The song was the 83rd local #1 single overall and the 64th since the Official NZ Music Chart began in May 1975.
Gin features strongly in this year’s charts with her album “Holy Smoke” the eighth most popular overall and second most popular by a New Zealand musician. Her single “Oh My” comes in at #29, the fourth most popular New Zealand song.
It’s a long way down the chart to #25 for the third most popular local album, Midnight Youth’s “The Brave Don’t Run”. The next top New Zealand single was J. Williams’ “Ghetto Flower” at #21 while “My House” by Kids of 88 comes in third at #26.
