Theia champions riot grrrl revival with epic fan track, 'Dollhouse' (Live)

Theia has dropped a fan track - an epic, grunge-fuelled live version of her recently-released single Dollhouse.

Dollhouse (Live) features a talented cast of LA-based musicians, each who bring their own unique style of playing to the live session. They include Hisako Ozawa on electric guitar, Aubrey Harris (Dove Cameron, Fletcher) on bass and Melanie Jo Dilorenzo (ZZ Top, Slash, Nancy Wilson) on drums.

“I love the original version of Dollhouse and its alt-pop/hyper-pop production, but I also had this idea where I wanted to interpret it with a girlband to embody the female rage in a riotgrrl way. So being based in LA for the past few months, I spent ages checking out various musicians and I came across Melanie playing drums on Instagram. She introduced me to the other players and instantly I was like ‘Yes! These women are freaking incredible’.”

The live version was arranged by none other than Auckland-based producer, musician and all-round bad-ass Marika Hodgson (Sorrento, Deva Mahal, Troy Kingi). It was recorded and mixed by LA-based Kyle Berzle (Broods, Tove Lo) and mastered by Chris Chetland at Kog Studios.

The video was shot at the Ragdoll Palace in Los Angeles by Saluzdina Banderas, who Theia met on the video shoot for her single Crucified By U.

“I met up with Sally and told her that I wanted to film Dollhouse in a life size dollhouse. It felt like a perfect treatment to symbolize the trappings of a patriarchal system that conditions girls to please the male gaze.”

Theia is currently half way through a New Zealand tour - Girl In A Savage World - which brings together both her projects (Theia and Te Kaahu) to present a beautiful stripped back bespoke show at various arts festivals. Upcoming shows include Tauranga Arts Festival on October 20; Hawkes Bay Arts Festival on October 22, Nelson Arts Festival on October 28 and the newly announced date of November 11 in Christchurch. Theia is a three-time nominee at the NZ Music Awards and has been a finalist in the George FM Awards and the Waiata Māori Music Awards. Her project Te Kaahu won the 2023 Taite Prize for Best Independent Debut with the exquisite debut album Te Kaahu O Rangi. The album was also nominated for “record of the year” and “best newcomer” at the 2023 Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards. Theia’s debut album is due for release in 2024.
