Aotearoa indie-pop artist Bridges has today unveiled her debut EP Twenty Something, along with the anthemic lead single and music video, Misfits.

With tracks about romantic and friendship breakups, therapy and antidepressants, all ultimately aiming to understand this pivotal decade, Twenty Something is packed with bold themes and nuanced stories. Written over the course of eight years, the 5-track EP is a sonic time capsule of a period in Bridges’ life which has been defined by growth, heartbreak, depression, friendship, and learning.

Twenty Something has a bit of everything; which is exactly how your twenties are and why it was so important for me to have all of these songs on the EP,” says Bridges. “There are songs like Pills and Misfits where you can dance around the house singing about putting bad situations into a positive light; songs like okay, alright and Gone where you can cry, feel all of the feelings and eat lots of chocolate; and then there’s Twenty Something, which is packed with nostalgia and ties the songs - and the decade - all together.”

An impressive array of musicians, producers and engineers played a part in the EP, with Rāwiri Waters acting as the driving force behind the majority of production and mixing. Twenty Something also features Josh Naley (Wells*, Navvy, Paige) on production; Jono Pierce (The Beths), Simon Gooding (Dua Lipa, Fazerdaze) and James Goldsmith (Mermaidens, Wiri Donna) also on mixing, and LA based, Grammy-winning engineer Brian Lucey on mastering.

On the EP is the lead single Misfits: supported by NZ On Air, the track is an indie-pop anthem about realising it's okay to let go of a close friendship. Driving guitars, sassy lyrics and a hook-laden chorus melody; this song is unexpectedly joyful and packed with meaning. It also comes with a music video shot by Christian Tjandrawinata (Kaylee Bell, There’s A Tuesday), and for the first time, features Bridges’ live band.

“My band - Bray, Rāwiri and Sam - bring so much energy to the live show,” says Bridges. “I’m excited to have them in the video with me and showcase that side of the music. We had so much fun filming it!”

Bridges has been dropping singles in the lead up to the debut EP, which have been received with widespread local media coverage. Gone was quickly added to radio across the country and featured on tastemaker magazine/blog Coup de Main, with the upbeat and empowering track Pills featuring on MTV, Sun FM, and The Hits.

Christchurch-born, Auckland-based Bridges (aka Rachel Hamilton) is quickly gaining momentum after transforming her sound from an acoustic singer and songwriter into a fully fledged indie-pop act, performing live with her powerful four-piece band. Recently opening for Aussie breakthrough act Teenage Dads at Auckland’s Tuning Fork with her captivatingly bold and engaging live act, Bridges is just getting started.

Bridges will be heading on tour to celebrate the release of today’s EP, performing with her live band at Space Academy for her home-coming show in Christchurch on November 25, as well as taking in Auckland, performing at Big Fan on December 8. Tickets are on sale now; this is a captivating live show you don’t want to miss.
