Nestled in the rolling Te Awanga hills of Te Matau-a-Māui / Hawke’s Bay, something special is about to be created. Outfield is a one day, family friendly event — a world class independent festival with a distinctive local vibe. 2024 marks the milestone of five years since its inception.
Since the first excursion out into the field, in early 2020, the Outfield community has blossomed, forging relationships between creatives that last long beyond the day itself. The festival takes, as part of its core kaupapa, a tukana teina model, with established artists and musicians featuring alongside those just coming up, fostering mentorship, a healthy, supportive learning environment, and community.
The next festival honours this, taking connection as its unifying theme. Tucked away in the shade of the cape, people of all ages and backgrounds, flavours and persuasions will come together to make new and beautiful memories.
Outfield is a celebration of Music, Food and Art, with a wide range of offerings to suit every taste, across three stages and numerous places for children of all ages to play.
The main stage opens out onto the cricket field that gives the festival its name, creating an arena vibe. Through the magical forest, the Art Valley stage offers a more intimate, offbeat musical experience. And in between, the Dance Yard is a bespoke space to shake loose to the finest electronic sounds around.
The 2024 edition of the festival is bursting with an eclectic mix of more than 25 exceptional performers and rising stars.
Troy Kingi (pictured) (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) is a prolific songwriter with voracious capacity and freakish efficiency. A true musical master, his mahi ranges from hard-hitting deep roots reggae to 70’s funk to 80’s synth pop. Troy, has been recognised for his releases over the years, through nominations and wins in the Aotearoa Music Awards, Waiata Māori Music Awards & Silver Scroll Awards.
Arguably one of Aotearoa’s biggest hip-hop innovators, David Dallas, brings out the big guns with two decades in the spotlight under his belt. He’s sold-out stadiums and opened for Eminem, consistently excelling with carefully crafted and expertly executed lyrics, ranging from the political to the deeply personal, producing a polished and poignant product that will get your hands in the air.
Tiny Ruins offers a rare blend of eloquent lyrical craft and explorative musicianship, treasured by crowds and critics for over a decade. Traversing influences that cross genre and era, the artistry of Hollie Fullbrook and her band spans delicate folk, lustrous dream pop and ebullient psychedelia.
Rum Jungle’s sun-soaked mixture of surf rock and alt-pop fit perfectly with Outfield’s coastal surrounds. Hailing from Australia’s steel city, they’ve sold out shows and become festival regulars across the ditch.
As co-founder of Splore, Amandamania (pictured) is a DJ who knows how to get a party going. A staple on the major festival scene, her unique blend of styles and grooves unleashes infectious energy onto the dance floor.
Shot through with sunshine and festival friendly joy, Flamingo Pier’s DJ set will bring their signature danceable indie soul & disco to create a unique sound of Kiwi Tropicalia for the dance floor.
Beccie B is a wāhine who has taken Aotearoa by storm with her high energy, lovingly created DJ sets. No two are ever the same but are guaranteed to get the crowd moving.
Trei is a legend on the antipodean DnB scene since back in the day, touring across the globe and collaborating with the greats. Showing zero signs of stagnation, he non-stop drops bass heavy beats and dance floor fillers at a pace that is relentless.
Alongside these legends, Outfield is committed to picking out the best of the region’s upcoming talent, giving talented local rangatahi the opportunity to share the stage with the greats, and the audience the chance to discover their new favourite band.
A trio of Hawke’s Bay teen bands, plucked from Rockquest wins, take their chance to please your ears and capture your hearts.
Te Whānau Puoro (pictured) took first place at the national Tangata Beats. Vocalist and pūtātara player, Shayne Te Kuru (Pāhaurewa, Kahungunu) is passionate about the band’s message that, “this generation are still aware of the impacts of colonisation and land confiscation on us…we are still here and will forever be here.”
Five-piece Uncle Les, treat your ears to a mixture of rock, indie and funk. Both covers and originals bring an energetic full sound beefed up with piano and sax. Lead singer, Jas, lends intense emotion to her vocals and onstage presence, while the boys keep the stage alive with loads of movement and audience interaction.
Dannivirke singer songwriter, Molly Pawson, catapulted to the spotlight after winning TVNZ’s Take the Mic competition with her original song, Home. Her rich voice and soulful folk guitar are sure to charm.
Local favourite Joe Cole will round it off with fire and ice. Drawing inspiration from his musician peers, he infuses a unique and original flair into the realms of indie folk, rock, and blues.
