Te-Whanganui-A-Tara via Ōtepoti artist Casey Strachan (prev. Lacuna, Juno Is) has a brand new project. Unlike previous efforts, his new band strays into a realm from which few return unscathed; the perilous depths of neo-punk. Mall Goth is a platform for Strachan to experiment with music that not only hits heavier than his past work, but employs a tongue in cheek delivery that we find very fashionable indeed. In this mosh pit, the ashen-eyed Deftones lover could, as unlikely as it seems, find themselves thrashing about side by side with fans of The Garden.
At first glance, the tone of self-released debut single Have a Nice Day Sir may seem optimistic, but Strachan’s lyrics come shrink wrapped in a layer of bitterness. An endearing chord progression is spun into a web of distortion, further enforcing Mall Goth’s sweet & sour juxtaposition. Fans of the more abrasive Flying Nun signees like The Gordon’s should feel right at home.
To celebrate the debut single’s release, Mall Goth are playing a show at Aotearoa’s greatest music club San Fran in Pōneke. Get your tickets to the Thursday 7th December show via Moshtix. Have a Nice Day Sir is released to the public 1st December.
