If Stevie Nicks lived out in the bush of Bethells Beach and performed in a circus you’d get Mikaela, with her latest single Black Cats. A song for all the misfits, artists, poets and children of the bohemian revolution. The final track from her sophomore EP.
Written by Mikaela and Noema Te Hau. Produced buy Noema Te Hau and coproduced by Mikaela, Johnny Fleury and Tony Waine.
Hailing in from west Auckland’s black sand beaches, songstress, Mikaela, started her musical journey at MAINZ graduating in 2019, where she made use of all the resources during her time there, coming out with her debut EP in 2020, Lucky Stars.
She’s opened for local rocker acts like Miss June on multiple occasions, her live set is like watching Alanis Morissette in the 90’s at the peak for her Jagged Little Pill era.
She’s about to complete the release of her sophomore EP Streets of My Mind with Black Cats. The first single of this sophomore EP Outwit You went to number 1 on BFM’s top 10, number 20 on the NZ official hot singles music charts and also landed on SRN charts and hangout at number 7 on RDU student radio station.
Earlier this year Mikaela received her first lot of funding from APRA, pairing her up with Buzz Moller from Voom, a third EP is on the horizon as well as lots of gigs!
“This track is about feeling like a misfit, which I think everyone feels sometimes, especially if you’re taking the road less travelled and aiming for something really close to your heart.
When you watch a tight rope walker, even if they’re doing well to reach their goal (which is the other side) you’re watching in total amusement, and if they fall and fail, its even more entertaining. This is how I felt like in my life. If things in my path were going well people were eager and amused to hear about it, and when things weren’t really working out, I was embarrassed, like I was about to be a laughing stock for people. Then there’s a whole other explanation for the circus freak but we’ll leave it there for now haha” - Mikaela.
