The Meech Brothers have chosen to close out the year with a release that is a lot more atmospheric than it’s predecessor – good-time single Korean Restaurant.
A primal lo-fi beat ushers in glorious reverb drenched guitars and synths and an understated vocal. This is not a Friday Night out clubbing – this is a quiet night in.
Following a different creative path than most of their other songs, Friday Night started life as one of keyboardist Clint’s ambient late (Friday) night electronic pieces. Guitarist Gareth cut, chopped and applied his song-writing sensibilities to craft it into a fully-formed song with hooky melodies (and vaguely ambiguous lyrics).
Never before has one of their songs represented each brother in such equal measure. This particular songwriting experiment has delivered a song of genuine beauty and restraint – a product that is far greater than the sum of it’s parts.
Friday Night – it’s a mood – out Friday 1 December 2023. Streaming everywhere.
Friday Night sits on the indie pop genre spectrum somewhere between dream pop and shoegaze. For fans of The National, Wilco, Slowdive, French for Rabbits, Neil Finn.
Gareth and Clint have been playing music together – and apart - in various bands since high school. They have been releasing music as the Meech Brothers since 2009 and so far have three EPs to their name (Lost at Sea, poco, Brown Owl). Clint has also played keyboards with Anxiety Club and Matt Langley and recently joined indie survivors Orangefarm. 2023 has seen them release a series of singles and put on some gigs (including a triumphant Sofar Sounds appearance).
