Aotearoa’s indie darling Rita Mae unveils the 'Superfeeling' Deluxe EP, featuring new tracks

Aotearoa’s rising indie star Rita Mae today releases the deluxe edition of her critically-acclaimed EP Superfeeling, featuring the recently released haunting track The Nightmare and reworked version of the single Candy’s House - Candy’s House (Comedown Song).

Superfeeling is all in the name; it’s an exploration of pop songwriting decorated in organic indie production. Organic acoustic guitars are woven throughout, matched with pianos and raw vocals recorded in a home studio. The initial release of Superfeeling was met with critical acclaim, and with today’s release of the Deluxe version, Rita Mae rounds out this era with two songs that couldn’t be left behind.

“In the making of a project, at least the way I write songs, it is impossible for songs not to get lost,” says Rita. “However, some songs have a tendency of haunting you, begging to not be forgotten. The Nightmare and Candy’s House (Comedown Song) are examples of this for me. I may not always have the luxury of releasing songs that are begging me to be released, but currently as an independent artist I do. I am choosing to take advantage of it.”

Rita recently released the haunting single The Nightmare, which received overwhelming support from the likes of ZM, The Edge, bFM, Rolling Stone and Coup de Main. Concluding the Superfeeling era comes the final single, the reworking of Candy’s House - the stunning track Candy’s House (Comedown Song).

“The original recording of this song captures the essence of the magical world I was chasing… however, it was also written in the aftermath of that escape,” reflects Rita. “I was hungover in bed and regretting the escape that I'd been so grateful for the night before - in other words I was coming down.”

“Because one side of the feeling has been explored with the original production of the song, I thought I owed it to the song to represent the other equally big (if not bigger) side of the feeling with this reimagined production of the song. Candy's House (Comedown Song) is that.”

Rita Mae has been making ripples in Aotearoa’s alt-indie scene since she started releasing songs like the stirring The Secret's Out in 2021 and then the effortlessly cool Candy’s House in 2021.

Earlier this year, Rolling Stone magazine tipped her as “one of eight Kiwis artists tipped to take over”, saying “Music is in her DNA, and Mae’s future as an artist in her own right looks very bright indeed…”

Having recently opened for the NZ tours of legends Gin Wigmore and Broods, Rita Mae has already earned herself a killer track record; while still only just getting started.

“I’m currently in Los Angeles again, on another writing trip to get as many songs out of myself as possible before the end of the year,” Rita explains. “I have so many new songs, the new direction feels clear and bright and colourful and so exciting, I can’t WAIT to release them into the world. I’m currently more in writing and recording mode, and gradually beginning to form a plan of my next steps.”
