Debut single (+ video) 'The Story of Takavi' introduces a new star to Aotearoa’s music constellation - meet VIDA

14 December 2023 - 0 Comments

Recorded at Black Hole Studio, Pōneke and produced by Mark Austin (Vera Ellen It’s Your Birthday), The Story of Takavi follows an alien who has arrived on Earth to transmute negative energy through vibrational frequencies.

Takavi is the alter ego of VIDA aka Vida Gibson, a 24 year old, polymathic singer and performer based in Tāmaki Makaurau, whose star is rising after her debut single and music video launched at a screening party at LOT23 gallery last night.

Combining bassy jazz vocals, ethereal harmonies and rhythmic breath - the track draws inspiration from innovators of soul and experimental art-pop such as Björk, Flying Lotus and Sun Ra. On this sonic journey, Takavi guides us in how we can connect to elements of water, earth and breath as a way to overcome anxiety.

“Open up and breathe, your breath is the gateway to the seed of the new age. We are here. We have teleported beyond fear.”

The single is the first from VIDA’s forthcoming EP Aquatopialien, set to be released in early 2024, and features John Gibson (piano), Tom Dennison (bass), and Samuel Austin (drums). The song was performed recently at Cubadupa (2023) and Mermaidens’ Mini Mergrown Festival (2022) and VIDA and her band are currently seeking out summer touring opportunities.

The music video for the single, co-directed by the singer and Frankie Berge, is a sci-fi adventure starting in outer space and travelling through Auckland’s public train system, the Capitol cinema, and even diving down the singer’s throat with the help of a probe camera.

Despite both single and video being independently released, VIDA has managed to pull some impressive talent into her orbit. With cinematography by Bayley Broompeek, choreography by Shona McCullagh, prosthetics and makeup by Tallulah Mcleen, and animation by emerging creator Imy Davies.

Local artists like Estere have provided valuable advice and encouragement as tuakana leading up to this debut release: "I really admire VIDA’s creative conviction, she is truly innovative and boundary breaking - I’m super excited for her journey!
