Rising talent Agnes Aleesy is set to release her latest single, 6 Years today. The track offers a tender, acoustic experience, weaving raw and introspective lyrics with melodies that seek solace in the embrace of sleep.
“This was one of those songs where I just sat down and it all poured out,” says Aleesy. “Anyone dealing with intense panic attacks, anxiety and depression will know that sometimes it feels like you’ve lost control of your body and mind. I had a naive hope that if I could just be good enough, god or religion would heal me. Listening back now still fills me with grief for my past self and the years of struggle and pain I dealt with and know so many other people have too.”
While the writing process was simple, the production came together slowly, starting during the Covid lockdowns with producer and flatmate Struan Finlay (Julius Black, Thomston, Josh Mac) who took the reigns along with Aleesy, and did the mix and master. The track features Agnes Aleesy’s brother, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra member Jonathan Tanner on the violin, and this project was born and funded thanks to NZ on Air’s ‘New Music Development’.
Agnes Aleesy, (aka Alice Tanner) is a multi-instrumentalist hailing from Ōtautahi, who is slowly making herself known as something new and exciting in the music scene. With only three releases under her belt, she has already garnered features on prominent platforms including local tastemaker Sniffers, international blogs, SRN's Top 10, and RDU's Te Ahi Top Ten, and an upcoming feature on RNZ.
Rooted in Aleesy's classical training as a pianist and cellist, 6 Years exudes her distinctive sonic signature: romantic strings, weaving melody lines and soft ethereal vocals over rich jazz-infused chords. The chorus pleads for sleep as an escape from the turmoil and the feeling that she has lost her mind. A song for the people stuck in the struggle, Aleesy hopes they find a moment of peace, a moment to feel seen, known, and understood.
