Brother Sister Release Japan Tour Music Video

18 January 2024 - 0 Comments

Synth pop band Brother Sister have released a music video for their song Take a pill from their new EP On a Roll. The video documents their EP release tour of Japan in October 2023 and is an action-packed montage, released on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. Artfully weaving phone footage with live performance material, the video captures the immediacy and intimacy of a band tour–family holiday crossover.

As an 80's throwback band, Brother Sister’s music and cinematography recall the comforting past of hedonistic consumer culture when Blade Runner was merely a cinematic concept. Several shots were filmed through mirror ball keyrings won from gacha machines at the trio’s favourite 8-bit café in Kyoto.

Other shots, however, place the music video firmly in present late-stage capitalism. Vocal scenes were performed in Tokyo’s Shibuya, famous for being an unwilling host to the “craziest Halloween in the world” each year. Shots show enthusiastic Halloween partiers, while behind the scenes were hundreds of police with megaphones attempting to disperse them.

Brother Sister performed four shows across Tokyo, Kobe and Kyoto in October last year to release their new EP On a Roll. Japanese music-lovers and venues embraced the energetic dance-heavy set and a sound that unapologetically references the rich, nostalgic sounds of 80's cartoons and cinema.

“Japan loves the analogue!” - Mike Rogers, MikeRogersShow

Enthusiastic audiences sang along to songs they were hearing for the first time and threw off shirts mid-show.

“Our favorite show was at a little underground venue in Kyoto called Pop Pizza. The crowd proceeded to sing along to songs they had only just heard and take their tops off.” - Synth player Dave Thomson

The trio of siblings have always been passionate about Japan.

“I've always wanted to go to Japan. So to get the opportunity to go over there to do what I love, playing music, too? What a dream come true! I'm still pinching myself!” - Bassist Taz Thomson

They love the culture, food and aesthetic and spent a large part of their downtime in the Japanese retro shops sourcing 80s collectibles.

“I loved the tour and all the shows, but if I'm honest, when I found an original 1982 ET record narrated by Michael Jackson, the trip for me was an immediate success!” - Drummer Ben Thomson

Dave Thomson (synth & lead vocals), Taz Thomson (bass & lead vocals) and Ben Thomson (drums) are electro-pop whizz kids who channel their passion for the sound and style of throwback 80s culture into an uplifting blend of electro-driven synth pop. Pulsing keyboards, programmed drums, driving bass and duelling melodic hooks are expertly blended to take listeners back to the future. Their live performances are fun, punchy and irresistibly danceable.

Brother Sister are releasing the EP On a Roll at Auckland’s Wine Cellar, 26 January 2024. They are also working on a vinyl album with Christchurch-based Leather Jacket Records to tour in New Zealand in April and May this year.
