The debut album from Ōtautahi pop-rock group Boardgames for Blondes is a blend of catchy pop tunes, 80's power ballads and rock anthems as the group flexes their songwriting muscles for the first time.
The group, consisting of Michele Webb on vocals and keys, Stephen Kennedy on lead guitar, Amanda Gray on bass, Rob Zipfel on drums and Andrew Groom on guitar and vocals, has been paying their dues on the covers band circuit for the last few years as their alter-ego, MockingBird, but the songwriting force is strong in this one!
From the driving infectious pulse of Feel the Beat and the classic rock Let’s Go to the dreamy, pop stylings of Listening Slowly and the Coldplay reminiscent Rock Steady, Boardgames for Blondes is exploring a range of styles and, with three songwriters in the group so far, there’s plenty more to draw from.
The group is a mix of ages and experience but they seem to have that special something required for any band to stay together through the creative process and come out stronger on the other side. According to Andrew Groom, “Recording On The Run with Richard Frew at Soundwaves has been a huge growth experience for us as a band and we couldn’t be happier with the results of our first outing - we all listen to the album a lot!”.
Andrew says that the group love bringing a good live show and feeling the love from an engaged audience. “When the crowd is pumping and we’re going for it, we’re all just looking at each other, smiling and thinking, ‘This is what we do this for’!”.
The group has several new songs in the works and a ton of lessons learned from the first album. Boardgames is now focussed on learning the in’s and out’s of streaming, marketing and promotion with the generous help of local bands Imperial April and The Late Starters, and is working towards a release party in August - which they assure us will be a great night!
