It's almost that time of year again...
With May just a few weeks away, this is the perfect time to let you know how we're going about celebrating local music during the month - and the tenth NZ Music Month!
Stay tuned to www.nzmusicmonth.co.nz, follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook, or hit up our MySpace to stay up with the latest news - but in the meantime look up May 1st in your diary and start making notes about where you want to be when this year's NZ Music Month kicks off.
Just like the month itself, we’ve got events spread out around Aotearoa and helping you find your favourite sounds across a wide variety of genres.
Kaitaia - Twin Peaks
The Jordan Luck Band @ 8pm
One of our most endearing music icons, Jordan kicks off his May Daze Tour (which sees The Jordan Luck Band play a show EVERY SINGLE DAY of NZMM) with this gig in the Far North. A fitting start to proceedings on so many levels, we’re delighted to have this Hall Of Fame-r on board.
Auckland - War Memorial Museum
Iva Lamkum @ 2.30pm
Wellington songstress Iva Lamkum has been going from strength to strength with her own material as well as her work with Sola Rosa. See and hear Iva for yourselves against the stunning backdrop of the Auckland Museum.
Manukau - Westfield Shopping Centre
Nesian Mystik @ 3pm
They’ve clocked up a ridiculous number of hit singles, albums, and awards and now if they play their cards right (not to mention the goodies off their forthcoming record), Nesian Mystik might just be awarded Westfield Employees Of The Month.
Auckland - Union Fish Co., Britomart
Bang Bang Eche and The Transistors @ 6pm
Audiences around the world are lapping up Bang Bang Eche, and fellow Christchurch band The Transistors could well be next. Find out what all the noise is about! 95bFM’s multi-venue extravaganza b Street then blasts into life immediately afterwards.
Palmerston North - The Royal
Just One Fix @ 9pm
Is it just us, or does Palmerston North seem to love long hair and loud guitars? We’re sure that’s the case, so Just One Fix are set to unleash their metal-tastic live show on The Royal. With a fresh new record out they’ve got the songs to back it up, pull on your best bogan tee and black it up with them.
Wellington - Mighty Mighty
Nick Bollinger in conversation with Dave Dobbyn @ 6pm
Dobbyn’s a bona fide legend who pops up several times in Nick Bollinger’s recently-published 100 Essential New Zealand Albums. Hear some of Bollinger’s favourite Kiwi cuts before the pair discuss the ins and outs of what makes Dave Dobbyn’s songs tick.
Queenstown - Dux de Lux
Kids Of 88 @ 8pm
This raunchy duo has just grown to a fully fledged live band, and Queenstown will get an early taste of what we’ll all be seeing plenty more of in coming months if recent monster hits by Kids of 88 are anything to go by. Seems like the kids are (just a little bit) alright.
Christchurch Art Gallery
Sacha Vee Quartet, Steve Abel, Kim K & Tim Chesney and The Canterbury Plainsmen go Pop from 5pm
A stunning line-up inside the spectacular confines of the Garden City’s Art Gallery. This may not be your typical venue, but then this isn’t your typical bunch of musos either. Who are The Canterbury Plainsmen, you say? Why, they are barbershop singers. Yes, really.
Dunedin - King’s High School
Die! Die! Die! @ 4pm
People are dying to get their hands on new recordings by Die! Die! Die!, but while kids in Dunedin are waiting for them to surface they can more than make do by checking out their incendiary live show. Don’t tell King’s, but their school auditorium might never be same.

All over Aotearoa - One day… 10 gigs
For the tenth gig let’s have ten more!
grabaseat are putting opshop on their own plane for the day and setting off on a country-wide journey to play ten shows all over the place. This feat isn’t as easy to pull off as it sounds, but if anyone can do it, it’s these fellas!
And to make things just that little more special, there’s a little bit of room on board for a select number of opshop’s biggest fans from around Aotearoa. Stay tuned for the day’s schedule and how to score yourself one of the seats.

You'll be hearing more about how these folks are involved in NZ Music Month over the coming days in weeks, but today we just wanted to make mention of our official accommodation partner, The Quadrant Hotel in Auckland. If any of the above gigs take your fancy, or any others during May for that matter, grab one of their NZ Music Month packages - it'll be Auckland's hotel hub for local music!
