Saurian, the octopedal rock unit from Dunedin are set to release their engaging new single, Down at the Crown on May 3rd. This is the second song to be released from their upcoming EP. It’s a tune celebrating the legendary venue, the Crown Hotel which has been the cornerstone of the Dunedin music scene for decades. Not only does the song aim to celebrate one of Saurian’s favourite venues, it also has a message.
In recent years it has become apparent that the Dunedin City Council doesn’t have any bylaws that make music venues around the city exempt from noise complaints. Since then, several local music venues have closed. There are now plans to develop the plot of land next to the Crown Hotel into housing which would threaten this beloved venue. With Down at the Crown, Saurian aims to bring attention to this ongoing issue.
Saurian opted for something special for the artwork for Down at the Crown and involved Austin Milne who had created an incredible comic strip about the Crown Hotel previously. The artwork features the iconic venue with its owner (and local legend in his own right), Jones Chin outside. The band have also created a no frills music video of themselves performing at the Crown Hotel during their first ever tour in 2023.
As usual, Saurian knows how to celebrate a release. The band will personally deliver the single live and loud to Dunedin (May 4), Christchurch (May 18), Invercargill (June 7), and Wanaka (June 15).
