Christchurch Town Hall Complex – Friday 28 May 2010
As the city braces itself for an influx of music industry heads, the organisers of Christchurch’s multi-stage indoor NZ Music Month Festival CHARTFEST 2010 are very much looking forward to hosting the vast array of personalities, many with important historical musical links to NZ’s ‘town of sound’.
Roger Shepherd, the founder of Flying Nun, the former Christchurch based world renowned record label returns to his old stomping ground to join the ‘Music – Present, Past and Future’ panel discussion with Graeme Downes from The Verlaines and Bruce Russell from The Dead C at the Town Hall on 28th of May.
Other experienced music industry reps include from the UK, Ande McPherson, ex Station Manager for XFM and Flash Taylor, the A&R Manager for Sony/ATV Publishing, bought to NZ by the NZ Music Commission and the NZ Music Managers Forum to discuss ‘Getting Heard in the UK’. Other seminars include PPNZ and APRA’s ‘Making Music Matter’ with Kristin Bowman, Ant Healey and David McLaughlin and joining the ‘Online Music Promotion’ session is Jody Lloyd from Melbourne.
From the Berklee College of Music, Pat Pattison, presents a taster session to his Christchurch songwriting seminars in association with CPIT and APRA. Attendees will get an insight into sharpening lyric writing skills and discovering the techniques that have helped Pat’s students, who have included John Mayer and Gillian Welch, to win Grammys and write number one songs. Nick Wilkinson, from the legendary UK band The Pretenders will present the bass guitar clinic while the electric guitar clinic is fronted by accomplished session axe-man for hire, Harry Harrison.
The music community and those interested in finding out more are welcome to attend the CHARTFEST music industry expo where many of New Zealand’s music organisations will represented. The NZ Music Commission, NZ Music Managers Forum, Independent Music NZ, APRA, RIANZ, PPNZ, NZ On Air as well as local radio stations, media, recording studio’s, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and many others will be presenting interactive stands from 4.30pm.
The afternoon at CHARTFEST features not only music performance clinics and expo, but also will attempt to break the record for NZ’s largest ukulele orchestra in the James Hay Theatre from 3.45pm. A fitting combined will see a massed ukulele orchestra perform the classic kiwi anthem ‘Why Does Love Do This To Me’ by The Exponents and there will be prizes awarded for Christchurch’s best ukulele orchestra group.
NZ Music fans from around the country have the opportunity to join the music month finale party with Air NZ’s Grabaseat Weekender package with a special deal on flights, accommodation and a complimentary ticket to CHARTFEST. CHARTFEST 2010 is open to the public with tickets $10 (students) or $17.50 (public) plus booking fee from Ticketek and Real Groovy. The event will runs from 1pm til 11pm on Friday May 28 across various rooms and floors in the Christchurch Town Hall.
