Acclaimed Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist Louisa Nicklin known for her introspective songwriting and captivating soundscapes, has released her latest single, Thick, alongside the announcement of her highly anticipated
second album, The Big Sulk. Following the success of her self-titled debut album in 2021, Nicklin has established herself as a prominent figure in the music scene, garnering critical acclaim and a devoted following.
Thick explores
the concept of leaning into a situation as a means of escaping thoughts, capturing a repetitive and chaotic energy that contrasts with the album's more purposeful arrangements. This guitar-driven track features playful riffs and unique sonic textures,
including nods to the distinctive guitar style of album producer Shayne P. Carter.

Regarding the single's creative process, Nicklin shares, "Thick was an opportunity to play around with strange sounds and fun little riffs, incorporating lots of Shayne Carter-inspired guitar moments."
The accompanying music video, created in collaboration with Ali Burns and Zoë Dunster, draws inspiration from 70's aesthetics and cuisine, blending elements of nostalgia with a touch of whimsy and intrigue.
"The video was inspired by 70's food and style,"
explains Nicklin. "We wanted to lean into some of the strangeness of the food from this era—it’s mildly unsettling but you can't quite put your finger on why."
The Big Sulk, produced by Shayne P. Carter, is a culmination of Nicklin's introspective songwriting and sonic exploration, recorded in the atmospheric setting of the Coromandel bush. The eight track album
promises to showcase Nicklin's signature style—searingly honest lyrics intertwined with visceral guitar work and dark, enveloping melodies.
