Menzies, Te Whanganui-a-Tara four-piece, have already gained a name for arresting live performances. Dancing from weighty post-punk to heart-felt ruminations on childhood, their songs express the wildly relatable.
“Turned up at the Karori swimming pool, and knew I shouldn’t have turned up”
“It cost me twenty bucks, you see, to buy my favourite DVD, don’t judge me, it was Notting Hill”
It’s no surprise the band hits so hard with the experience and passion of the musicians involved - magnetic front-man Chris Brown (Friendlies), Miles Sutton (Welcomer, Prizegiving), Nikita Piper (Friendlies, Androgynous Lemon), and Doug Kelly (Doledrums, Girlboss). Oliver Devlin (Hans Pucket) mixing the EP, and Vivek Gabriel, Gabriel Audio mastering.
8/10, the first single from Spaghetti Land is a journey through years gone by. Strung together by the guitar of Miles Sutton, the lyrics wander through places and experiences that feel familiar and warm, with a vocal crescendo that leaves shivers and smiles.
Their live show heralded by the likes of MJ Lenderman, touring Te Ika-a-Māui this July, see Menzies’ arresting and joyous live performance in a place near you:
