Persimmon, jangle-pop darlings from humble Te Papaioea, return with their debut album Tomorrow Morning slated for release this year. The first single True Crime has received significant attention, recently holding the top spot of the NZ RadioScope Alt charts. Last year the band were featured on the SRN award-nominated Felt Cute, Might Delete compilation. RadioControl Breakfast Host Kupe affectionately describes them as “cute indie rock for the people”.
Cleaning Graves is the second single from the upcoming debut album, the band’s take on the classic “rock ballad”. Lyrically the song gives introspection to the mundane, describing an atypical family scene set in semi-rural New Zealand. A harmony rich chorus gives way to sprawling guitars that build in a reference to Big Thief. Cleaning Graves will be released on May 30, 2024.
Persimmon formed when principal songwriter Austin Boyle returned to Aotearoa after years living and playing music in Melbourne, bringing influence from the contemporary garage pop scene and collaborating with local multi-instrumentalists. Persimmon produce catchy indie pop songs characterised by Kiwi accents delivering slice-of-life lyrical accounts supported by harmonies and crisp clean guitars.
Their music pays homage to Australian indie pop acts like Dick Diver, Chook Race and Stella Donnelly, with a subtle nod to 90's pop and early Flying Nun bands.
