Dr. Reknaw have done it again, this time with a seductive, sultry, wāhine anthem Sisters of the Plant, inspired by the notion of feminine unity and connection. Co-produced by Serebii, the single is a masterful new wave dub anthem, showcasing the groups love for and inspiration from reggae, dub and roots music. In classic Dr. Reknaw style this track is catchy, uplifting, and earthy.
"I had the song title and concept in my head for a month or so before one day the song came to me in one hit, it came so easily, as if I downloaded it from somewhere beyond me. It felt so fun and light, and since writing it I’ve been so excited to bring that energy to a live audience" - says Sophie (bass & vocals).
It has been nearly 4 years since Dr. Reknaw has played in Pōneke, so 2nd August at San Fran, it is set to be a piping hot reunion. With support from long time friend Nikau Te Huki aka Casual Healing, who will have finished his own album release tour and another old friend DJ Amira, it's time to re-ignite the flame that is Dr. Reknaw in the capital city.
Recorded remotely across Aotearoa in various home studios (Taranaki, Auckland, Christchurch) this track showcases the authentic playfulness of the sisters (Julia and Sophie) and their musical brothers (Luther Hunt and Jules Blewman). It has a cheeky essence, perhaps reflecting the bands nature of not taking life too seriously, keeping things light and fun.
"Although we’ve been quiet on the public side of band life, we’ve been writing lots and will be recording later in the year. Our musical journey feels to have been in a winterly period - inward, creative and reflective. We’ve been letting other aspects of our lives flourish while our music simmers away in the background, which feels very nourishing to not be grinding it out, or feeling any pressure to release or tour when it is not in alignment with the rest of life. This said, we feel that spring is dawning, and that we are only getting warmed up." - says Sophie.
