Imperial April, Christchurch’s power-pop quartet fronted by vocalist and bassist Victoria Knopp, has just dropped their new single, Try To Have Fun. The first track since the release of their debut album at the end of 2023, is a change of pace for the band. This infectious track is a delightful blend of 90's alt-rock nostalgia and modern sophistication, showcasing the band’s versatility and knack for crafting memorable tunes.
Try To Have Fun opens with a brooding chord progression, reminiscent of Elliot Smith, over a quietly driving rhythm section. The chorus hits like a burst of confetti, with a wall of guitars and strings hinting at influence from Smashing Pumpkins. It’s a testament to Imperial April’s ability to seamlessly blend indie-pop sensibilities with grunge-rock energy. Knopp’s poignant lines explore the struggle to find joy amidst life’s chaos. As she sings, “Loosen up, just try to have fun, 'cause there’s so much out here to see” we’re drawn into her emotional landscape.
The production on Try To Have Fun is pristine. The band’s attention to detail shines through – from the crisp drum grooves to the dreamy guitars that add an otherworldly dimension. Try To Have Fun is a gem that deserves repeat listens. It’s a bold step forward for the band, and we can’t wait to see where they go next.
Catch Imperial April performing at Go Live Festival at the Christchurch Town Hall on August 17.
