Sailors is a tongue in cheek commentary on the ego maniacs, self-victimised people who hide behind self-diagnoses and facing their own pitfalls. It attempts to capture the power of the live performance, staying true to the gritty guitar sound against a hard hitting, driving drum beat, that Napoleon Baby generates throughout their sound.
Napoleon Baby brings a fresh, incisive edge to their music, blending anthems that confront life’s injustices, frustrations, and everyday struggles with unapologetic honesty. In a time when authenticity is often just a buzzword, Napoleon Baby truly embodies it. This British-Kiwi band proudly follows in the footsteps of legendary British acts like The Jam, Oasis, and Arctic Monkeys, embracing a tradition of bold, unflinching storytelling. With a fearless approach, they place real-life issues and hard-hitting truths at the forefront of their music, unafraid to challenge norms or confront uncomfortable realities. Their commitment to substance over superficiality sets them apart, as they deliver a raw, unvarnished reflection of the world around us, resonating deeply with those who crave authenticity and relevance in their music.
Sailors, the latest single from Napoleon Baby, is the first in a run of singles leading to the release of their debut album in late 2024 and their first since signing with Group Speed. Sailors is a satirical look at individuals with inflated egos who often play the victim, hiding behind self-diagnoses to avoid confronting their own flaws. The narrative critiques how they manipulate self-perception and external perceptions, questioning the authenticity of their self-awareness and the sincerity of their introspection. Napoleon Baby chief songwriter, Dan, says, “It’s a homage and an awakening for those of us who only want to remain in the red, who want to always be in the fight…basically hipster arseholes who never leave their small town”.
Napoleon Baby draws from a wide and captivating array of influences, spanning the soulful depth of Nina Simone and the harmonies of The Everly Brothers to the introspective edge of Thom Yorke and the grit of Arctic Monkeys. Their sound also nods to the eclectic styles of Arcade Fire, Talking Heads, The Modern Lovers, and Violent Femmes. By blending these inspirations, Napoleon Baby creates contemporary and thought-provoking soundscapes while maintaining a traditional approach to songwriting that resonates deeply with audiences, striking a balance between innovation and timelessness.
NAPOLEON BABY will be playing live across NZ later this year including;
4th Oct – Last Place, Hamilton
5th Oct – The Yard, Raglan
29th Oct – Space Academy, Christchurch
8th Nov - Ponsonby Social Club, Auckland
