New release from Ōtepoti band Robots in Love

The Sequel is the new release from powerhouse Ōtepoti band Robots in Love and it completely shatters the wall between rock and electronic music.

The talent in this band is formidable. Vocalist Elenor Rayner is a producer and remixer with credits on more than 80 releases. Drummer Alex Burchell is a producer and remixer who has played in symphony orchestras. Bass guitarist Tony Lumsden has played in some of Aotearoa’s best loved bands.

It’s unusual to have two producers in a band but in this case it more than doubles the impact. Their distinct sound comes from the raw intensity of Rayner combining with the precision and finesse from Burchell, and Lumsden on bass adds the finishing touch.

The band lists amongst their influences Bring Me The Horizon and Nine Inch Nails but they treat genres as ingredients laid out on a smorgasbord from which they pick and choose. The best description they’ve heard of their sound is “unpigeonholeable”. They are obviously deeply passionate about the music they create, but there's also a humour there which keeps the whole thing grounded.

Robots in Love have previously released three EPs as well as tracks on local and international compilations.

The Sequel, an epic 6 minute track, combines dark electronics with heavy guitars and Orwellian lyrics. The video was filmed on top of Mount Cargill and at the Dunedin Gasworks Museum, one of only three functioning gas museums in the world.

“With The Sequel we started with a driving electronic base and an epic story of war and equality, and then we wondered what it would sound like with metal guitars, and that was a game-changer. The result is pretty much everything we love in music.” - Elenor Rayner

The release also includes a 7-and-a-half minute dance remix from studio legends Techno-Logique.

Their sound is even more powerful in their live shows. They’ve been touring the motu and played shows in Australia and are returning there next month.

You can catch them Oct 4 in Oamaru, Oct 5 in Christchurch and Nov 9 in Wellington.
