Em, the solo project of audio engineer and songwriter Emily Wheatcroft-Snape, is set to release her debut album Phases on October 11, 2024. Ahead of the album, Em dropped her lead single Reach Out, which is out now.
Phases is deeply personal work that documents Em’s journey through loss and self-reflection. The album merges the sounds of indie, pop, and folk, blending mesmerising guitar patterns, moody synths, and rich vocal layers with Em’s signature production style. This project sees Em exploring themes of grief, self-discovery, and emotional resilience.
The lead single, Reach Out, offers a preview of the album’s contemplative tone. Anchored by hypnotic guitar loops and drums, Reach Out encapsulates late-night restlessness, reflecting the themes of grief and yearning. With production that loops like a quiet, pulsing heartbeat, the song captures the universal feeling of longing for something or someone no longer there. Recorded at Parachute Music, Reach Out showcases Em’s creative process in a raw and authentic way.
Em shares, “This song was born out of my own experience with loss, but as I wrote it, I realised it captured a feeling that many people could relate to. The production and songwriting in this track are more intertwined than in my usual work, which created a unique energy in the song.”
Phases collates Em’s two previous EPs, Tender and Cloud City, and introduces three new tracks to complete the narrative. The album’s creation, which began in September 2022, draws on Em’s growth as an artist and her reflective process during a challenging time. "The album is cyclic," Em says, "a representation of my internal journey and how it evolved over time."
Produced, recorded, and mixed by Em herself, the album features collaborations with a close-knit team of contributors, Manuela Johnston (Big Tasty), Josh Johnston, Luan Meaker, Mackensie Clayton, and Josh Strand.
Reach Out is available on all streaming platforms now. Phases will be available on all streaming platforms from October 11, 2024.
