NZ-born, UK-based pop sensation Robinson showcases her songwriting prowess on her new single David Blaine, out today.

Following on from recently released singles Landslide and The War On Art, David Blaine is another emotionally charged and deeply personal song.

Sonically, David Blaine sits on the grittier side of Robinson’s pop palette, with big melodic guitar parts and an anthemic ‘punch-the-air’ chorus, which add to the powerful lyrical message behind the song.

“I wrote David Blaine about my battle with eating disorders and body dysmorphia through my younger years / early 20's and how the mind goes through such an intense, dark mental space when dealing with these things,” says Robinson.

The song came together in stages - the verses and pre-chorus being written in 2021, not long after Robinson moved to London. The soaring chorus came two years later when house-sitting in the UK with co-writer and producer Charles Macdonald.

“I was searching for the chorus, and I had a strong sense of what I wanted it to feel like but hadn’t found it yet. The housesit owners said they had an old guitar we could use and although Charles has a million guitars, we loved the idea of incorporating a part of the house into the song. Late one night, magic was in the air! We set up, got the guitar and the chorus fell right out!”

David Blaine and the recently released singles Landslide and The War On Art have seen Robinson baring her all, touching on the raw realities of being a young woman in the music industry. It’s allowed Robinson’s artistry to shine brighter than ever before.

“As an artist, passion, vulnerability, and deep emotion is at the core of everything I am driven by in music. As time goes on, this deepens within me and I feel ‘David Blaine’ is a direct reflection of the desire I have to dive into the soul, all thoughts and bring them to the light, despite how uncomfortable.”

Robinson has been making waves since her 2018 smash hit Nothing To Regret, which has had 127 million streams on Spotify alone and has been certified Platinum in New Zealand and double Platinum in Australia. In 2020, she released her debut four-track EP Watching You, followed in 2023 with her EP Chasing Nirvana, featuring the single Things Aren’t Nice In Paradise which hit #1 on the Hot 20 NZ Singles Chart. The EP clocked up hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify alone, with Teenage Renegade reaching over 1.5 million. In 2023 she also opened for OneRepublic, taking in shows across Australia before performing at Auckland’s Spark Arena.
