Nganeko is shining on her latest single, Simple Illusion - an exquisite and deeply personal song about connection, friendships and hardships.
Simple Illusion is the sister track to her most recent release, Down Bad Patrol. Both songs sit effortlessly alongside one another to create a dreamy, laid back soundscape showcasing one of Aotearoa’s most captivating voices.

The dreamy Simple Illusion is “about life and experiencing the illusion that the power-driven world feeds us and working through the hardships with the people we love and choose to be around. It’s me asking for my loved ones to do life with me,” says Nganeko.
Both Simple Illusion and Down Bad Patrol were co-written with and produced by Brandon Haru and Brent Parks, best known for their work with Aotearoa’s legendary Ladi6. Both were mastered by Jack Palmer.
Once again, Nganeko worked with critically acclaimed fashion photographer/director Apela Bell, assisted by Ally Lase, on the visuals for Simple Illusion.
“Apela is the absolute Don. I’m in awe of all of his work, always. It was important for me to be comfortable and I’d worked with him before so it only made sense to me. I knew he’d nail my vision perfectly and he did, period! The song is relaxing and yet enticing, so I went with a powerful staple look and a naked face and natural hair.”
Nganeko has been quietly building a loyal fanbase for the last few years with releases such as Serious and Facade which provided just a small taste of her immense talent. She has also collaborated with a host of well-known New Zealand acts, including Church & AP, Troy Kingi and most recently with Leaping Tiger.
