Christchurch Artist Phoebe Vic Announces Self-Deprecating Diss-Track

15 November 2024 - 0 Comments

Hot off her appearance at GO Live Festival in July and preparing for her summer circuit debut at Nostalgia Festival early next year, Phoebe Vic releases Wasn’t That Deep - a fierce and firmly tongue-in-cheek, self deprecating diss-track about an online dating app match gone sour.

“I think this is a common experience for a lot of people in this modern dating game,” says Vic. “I had built up this relationship so much over such a short period of time that when it turned out that this person wasn’t that into me, I was so devastated! It was very f***ing embarrassing and I was extremely annoyed that I cared so much!”

Wasn’t That Deep was created alongside APRA Silver Scroll nominee and producer, Emily C. Browning, with mix and master completed by Stephen Marr.

“Phoebe came into the session wanting to make something guttural and pulsating, like some kind of pounding headache in song form.” Emily explains. “I think we achieved that pretty well with some freaky synths and samples. There’s also an element of silliness that I really enjoyed playing with.”

Drawing on various musical references and genres, Wasn’t That Deep ducks in and out of a rolling trap-hat rhythm. It’s punctuated with horse whinnies and dog barks, before shifting abruptly into “rose tinted glasses” romanticism - complete with bird tweets and arpeggiated synth strings.

“When Emily and I were making the song, I wanted the music production to feel really in your face and intense and to go in all these different directions - which is what your emotions are like when you are having these repeated attempts and failures of connection.” Vic says.

“The chorus chant “Wasn’t That Deep!” is like a mantra to myself - I should just “get over it!” As if it is ever that easy!”

Wasn’t That Deep is released alongside a music video, shot on a 2005 digital camera in the middle of the night, in Emily’s backyard.

Please note that this video contains some nudity, coarse language and adult content.
