An uplifting and timely tune, which leans into the band’s signature roots, rock, funk n’ reggae sound, Proud is the first single from the six-piece since their 2023 album Moment In Time.
And the band is pumped to be back!
Proud sees 1 Drop Nation teaming up with one of Aotearoa’s leading producers Dr Lee Prebble (L.A.B., The Black Seeds, Kora, Trinity Roots) and showcases the band’s penchant for turning out catchy bangers with a powerful message.
“This song is about being proud of who you are. It also talks of the journey our people have been through and what our ancestors have done for us to be here today representing our Māoritanga,” says 1 Drop Nation’s lead singer Kanei Johnson.
“We love making music for the people. ‘Proud to be me, Proud to be Māori’,” adds Kanei.
Helping to capture the sentiment of Proud, is a heart-warming and high energy video featuring Māori tamariki and a kura kaupapa Māori school from Christchurch.

“It shows our next generation being so proud of who they are and what they represent,” explains Kanei.
“We filmed this video clip in 90 minutes and the kids did so well. They were on point for all of their parts. We are so proud to now have them a part of our journey.”
To celebrate the release of Proud, the band is playing a show in Ōtautahi on Saturday, November 30 at Altiora. Get tickets here.
Alongside their November show, the band has announced they will hit the road this summer. Kicking off on Friday, January 17, they will perform at Kaikōura’s Memorial Hall; on Saturday, January 25 they are performing at NZ Spirit Festival in Charteris Bay Christchurch.
