Get your band out of the garage

28 April 2011 - 0 Comments

Tune in garage bands. Here’s your chance to make it big – well, at least a bit bigger.

It’s a great gig for talented amateur musos to get out of the garage and on to the world stage in the Metro Garage Bands competition.

Rough and ready or silky smooth – it doesn’t matter. As long as you’ve got three good covers and can clamber on stage you’re in with a shot at first prize of a day’s recording time at the Red Bull Studio in Auckland.

The Metro Garage Bands competition at Auckland bar Sale St kicks off in May with three heats and a final in June. The only rules are you must be an amateur band – barman backhanders are OK – and you’ve got to get your CD or tape to the organisers before May 23, 2011.

Entrants will be whittled down to 12 semi-finalists competing over three nights in front of three judges and a ‘discerning’ Sale St audience which will have one vote of four. The heats are on May 29, June 5, June 12 and the final is on June 19.

There’s a measly $5 cover charge each night for the public and all proceeds go to the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre which provides music therapy services for disabled children.

Co-sponsor Simon Wilson says it’s a great opportunity for amateur bands to step in to the spotlight.

“We’ve got a great line-up of very talented judges,” he says. “The recording session prize is a wonderful opportunity to lay down some top quality material at a professional recording studio - and you never know where that could lead.”

Sale St owner Luke Dallow, who is a fond music lover says ‘I’m delighted to be to working with Metro to help the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre. Everybody knows we love music at Sale St so it’s fantastic.’

“The centre does wonderful work helping kids to communicate through song and melody. It’s going to be fun and all for a good cause so come on down to Sale St.”
