Established in 2000, the Band Experiments is a 'battle of the bands' format music competition with a twist! The event features bands of many different styles and has a great reputation for choosing local Waikato bands who have moved on to great national success. Previous contenders have been Cornerstone Roots, Katchafire, Sora Shima, Knights of the Dub Table and Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers who gained recognition through the competition, starting them on their journey to take New Zealand and the world by storm.
2010 winners Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers recorded their latest single Deviant at York Street Studios as part of the prize package, as well as producing a music video and CD distribution for their album.
The Hamilton Live Music Trust, an organisation developed under the Hamilton Community Arts Council (Creative Hamilton), took over the management of the event in 2009 and it continues to grow every year. Last year's heat and finals featured full capacity crowds at the venue.
The response to original live music from the audience was fantastic and supportive. Everyone in the crowd got to experience styles they may not be familiar with. It was great to see bands gathering new fans.
The York Street Studios Band Experiments for 2011 are definitely no exception and are set to be bigger, better and brighter than ever before!
It is now considered one of the premier highlight music events on the Waikato region calendar.
This year York St are also happy to have new sponsor Chasing Time Productions on board. Their incredible filmmaking talent has exhibited in their new short film Lily White, which has been accepted into international film festivals. They are also happy to have http://www.amandashootsbands.com on board - one of New Zealand's most familiar faces in band photography.
The Trust itself has been impressed with the level of musicianship shown in the band entries. Each year there have been entries from all over the Waikato region.
The Band Experiments does allow bands with members under 18 to enter, as long as they have a guardian with them at all times at the venue.
