Kimbra has been named as the 2011 winner of the Gravity Coffee Critics’ Choice Prize.
The Unfaithful Ways, Popstrangers and Kimbra performed live at the King’s Arms in Auckland last night where a panel of 13 top music critics was charged with selecting a winner they believe has the talent to add a Tui to the mantelpiece and pursue a successful music career.
Kimbra says: “It’s wonderful to be acknowledged here in my homeland by critics and music industry insiders. I’ve put a lot of hard work into my music and winning the Critics’ Choice Prize means the world to me.”
In addition to being recognised by the nation’s top music industry experts, Kimbra also gets a hand up in the competitive music marketplace.
Kimbra gets a $10,000 recording and music video grant from NZ On Air, a $2,000 gift voucher courtesy of The NZ Rockshop and a ‘Band Box – Pumped’ CD Replication and Poster combo from Forge Media.
The prize kit also includes mentoring from some of the finest business minds in the industry including the Music Managers Forum, Eccles Entertainment, Entertainment Accounting, McLaughlin Law and the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand.
“With three such fantastic artists it’s always a very tough job for our critics. Sincere congratulations to Kimbra for winning on a night when we had a clear demonstration of the strength and depth of NZ Music in 2011,” says RIANZ managing director Chris Caddick.
Last year Home Brew, The Naked and Famous and Street Chant were the 2010 Critics’ Choice Prize finalists with Street Chant taking out the honours.
Since then, all three have gone on to further success with The Naked And Famous topping this year’s VNZMAs finalists list, Street Chant getting its first nod as finalist in the Best Alternative Album category and Home Brew continuing to build their reputation as one of New Zealand’s best live bands.
While Kimbra took home the goodies last night, you’ll certainly be hearing much, much more from all three of the 2011 Critics’ Choice Prize finalists if last year’s line-up is anything to go by.
