'Maryland' - The New Album From Mary

18 January 2002 - 0 Comments

With the Independent release of their debut album ‘Maryland’ making it on the New Zealand album charts – This all girl Indie pop band have their cake and eat it too !

Recently returned from a 4 date tour of Melbourne, Mary are once again back on their home turf with a bunch of new songs and some more local gigs on the way. Mary’s latest single “Big Boy” a truley Kiwi Christmas song, proved that the Mary’s music can span all radio formats with stations ranging from the bNet to major nationwide networks playlisting the song.

Their sugary pop hits sound good enough to eat! Recorded at Frisbee in Auckland, and mastered at KOG, Mary released and funded their album ‘Maryland’ on their own record label – ‘Panty Records’. Maryland followed on from the success of their previous EP releases of ‘Bigger’ (1999) and ‘Golden Halo’ (1998). The album also includes the CDRom versions of three Mary videos – ‘Kissing Booth’, Someone Else’, and ‘Matt’

The ‘Mary’ sound is catchy power-pop/rock. Compared to Luscious Jackson and The Bangles, but delectable in their own ways. Mary have their own recipe for success! They have managed themselves to ensure the most fun is had and with the help of distributor Global Routes, have captivated New Zealand with ‘Maryland’. Anyone who has been to a Mary gig will know these girls are about ‘serious’ fun, with a great sound and a good time!

Mary are Niki Maera (Guitar, Vocals), Dee Taylor (Guitar, Vocals), Belinda Hainey (Bass, Vocals) and Nadine Rae (Drums, Vocals).

In the four years since their first EP release, Mary have proven they have what it takes to get to the top. Big Day Out, Sweetwaters & The University Orientation circuit has seen Mary grow a live audience following of all ages. Regular New Zealand tours have seen them supporting International acts such as Supergrass, Catatonia, The Lemonheads, Bare Naked Ladies, Spiderbait, Blink 182, Tonic, Guitarwolf, The Lemonheads, The 5,6,7,8’s and lso great New Zealand artists HLAH, The Feelers, Garageland, Stereobus, Tadpole, The Exponents, Hello Sailor, Chris Knox, Stellar, Fur Patrol and others.
