Preparations for the biggest night in New Zealand music are gathering pace with nominations for the 47th annual RIANZ Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards opening today (May 21).
In 2011 the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards shifted from its usual early October date to the beginning of November to side-step the Rugby World Cup.
Following the success of last year’s awards the industry has unanimously voted to keep the November date going forward. As a result, this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards ceremony will take place on 1 November at Auckland’s Vector Arena.
Organiser the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand says it is looking forward to seeing who will be throwing their hats into the ring following a big 12 months for New Zealand music.
“It’s shaping up to be an amazing year for New Zealand music and we’re very excited to showcase it at the Awards,” says Chris Caddick, managing director at RIANZ.
Details on how to submit a nomination can be found at www.rianz.org.nz/nominations/vnzma2012. Unless otherwise specified, awards are open to New Zealand artists who have had recordings commercially released between 1 June 2011 and 30 June 2012. Nominations stay open until 5pm on Monday 2 July.
Nominations are being accepted for Album and Single of the year, Best Group, Best Male and Female Solo Artists, Breakthrough Artist, Best Music Video, Best Maori, Rock, Urban / Hip Hop, Electronica, Roots, Pop, Alternative, Gospel / Christian and Classical albums. There are also technical award categories of Best Producer, Best Engineer & Best Album Cover.
The Finalists Announcement and Technical Awards presentation is in Auckland on Wednesday 3 October. The announcement of the 2012 Legacy Award recipient and New Zealand Music Hall of Fame inductee – presented last year to iconic Kiwi band Dragon – and the Critics’ Choice Prize showcase line-up is also made at that time.
