National Radio Goes 100% NZ Music

This year's New Zealand Music Week on National Radio is shaping to be a veritible feast of all things kiwi with a range of programmes and music which celebrate our New Zealand music industry.

From Saturday 24th May, all playlist music, all regular music features and programmes on National Radio will salute New Zealand music.

From National Radio's flagship New Zealand music programme 'Home Grown' to 'Cadenza Light Classics', from 'Wayne's Music' to 'The Sampler', from 'The Mix' to 'Jazz Spotlight', and from 'Hymns on Sunday Morning' to 'Musical Oddities' and 'On This Day', you can expect to hear New Zealand music and culture spread across the entire National Radio network next week.

Co-ordinated by Music Features producer Liisa McMillan, there will also be a range of specially commissioned documentaries and programmes which take an in-depth look at the many different aspects of the New Zealand music industry; from Te Reo Maori music in 'Mai I Te Ku Ki Te Kuta', 'Kapa Haka Buzz' and 'Akona!', a sampling of the blues scene in 'Queen Street Caravan', highlights from the Resonate conference, interviews and live performances from a variety of musicians, the increasing profile of New Zealand music internationally in 'Taking It To The World', and Liisa's own documentary continuing the history of one of New Zealand's original record labels, Flying Nun Records.

NEW ZEALAND MUSIC WEEK : SPECIAL TREATS

Rick Bryant and The Jive Bombers:

- 'Live At Helen's' - 3:30pm - Saturday 24 May & Wednesday 28 May -

Rick Bryant's stretched R&B band, the eleven piece Jive Bombers, celebrate their twentieth anniversary this year. Most of the songs in this session were written by Rick, sometimes with other band members, over the years. It's the first time any of them have recorded! Rick says "Our music is all derived from the blues, and I think audiences are interested enough to give them a little bit of the ancient history, along with the recent."

Deep in the South Pacific of Bass:

- 'Reggae In New Zealand' - 11:05am - Sunday 25 May -

The reggae history of Aotearoa runs deep. But why has it made such an impact here? And how does the Pacific Reggae differ from the traditional Jamaican sound? New Zealand's foremost practitioners and fans discuss and evolving spritual, political, cultural and musical phenomenon.

Flying Nun Records 4:

- 'The Sound Is Out There' - 3:06pm - Sunday 25 May -

As Flying Nun's cult reputation spreads overseas, more bands tour and record in the Northern hemisphere. As opportunities and ambitions increase, the company tries to underwrite those desires by focusing on the international music market. Founder, Roger Shepherd, moves to London to lead the charge... in the hope that a Flying Nun band will have a hit.

Touchstone: Sound Communities:

- 'Blast Beats - Death Metal' - 5:10pm - Sunday 25 May -

This scene consists of individuals who regard themselves as practising Satanists as well as those who appreciate the sonic fury of the music alone. But it is collectively orientated by the symbols and dark currency of Satanism, evoked in the clothing, lyrics, album imagery and music of the community.

Seven Voices:

- 'Tales of Madness & Mirth' - 10:25am - Monday 26 May -

By Mike Chunn in 10 parts starting on Monday 26 May (daily Monday-Friday for two weeks). Seven Voices is about a quest born from childhood inspiration to be a rock star. In the voice of a child, a youth, a young man, and a father Mike Chunn leads us through time and space as we share his journey. Spanning almost four decades from schooldays with the Sisters of Mercy, through to London and Split Enz in the mind bending days of the 1970's, to a time when his life as a musician was held back by a meancing phobia, Chunn takes us on his quest to realise his dream: a life in music.

The Granddaddy of New Zealand hip hop, Dean Hapeta, Tui award winner, film producer, rapper, artist & breakdancer speaks about his many years in the industry and the positives and negatives of non commercial success in his career. Dean also shares his veiws on the importance of his music in Te Reo Maori.

Resonate 1 : Watching Windows:

In February 2003, respected and influential members of the UK music industry visited New Zealand to share experiences and ideas with New Zealanders interested in seeing our music - and music business - thrive on the international stage. National Radio edited highlights from the conference.

New Zealand born Brent Hansen, Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks Europe (seen in over 107 million homes) gives a bit of background about himself, his job and his network, and talks about how and why some videos make it to the small screen - and others don't. Mai I Te Ku Ki Te Kuta:

Maori music cannot be categorised. Attempts to do so have created identity crises. For some musicians, being recognised as Maori matters: and for others it doesn't. The resulting tensions have changed the face of New Zealand music. Produced and presented by Tainui Stephens and Mamari Stephens. (Pt 7 of 8)

Resonate 2 : Money For Nothing?:

Highlights from Resonate 2003 - an exchange of music industry experience. Stephen Budd (a UK based artist manager with interests in music publishing, live venues & print and radio media) discusses the role of the manager - and what makes a good one; and gives his veiw of current and potential trends in the business and management areas of the music industry. Kapa Haka Buzz:

"It's the indescribable prescence on stage, the ihi, wehi and mana that gies you such a kick, it's the best." - A participant at the Kapa Haka Festival, Orakei, Auckland. The 'Kapa Haka Buzz' is a common feeling for those who take part either as a performer, supporters, whanau or as a member of the audience. It's about 'whakawhanaungatanga' - strenthening family bonds and working together to achieve the ultimate performance of waiata, poi and haka.

Resonate 3 : The Art Of Noise:

With the current high profile of NZ music internationally, this programme examines the various strategies employed by a cross-section of local musicians, music commentators and industry figures in their efforts to capitalise on the current interest, and take our sounds to the world.
