New Zealand bands continue their push into the big overseas markets with the announcement that Pine, Greg Johnson, King Kapisi and Wai 100% have been invited to play the Summer Stage festival in Central Park, New York on Sunday 13 July 2003. This is the first time that the Summer Stage festival has had a New Zealand segment.
The NZ Music Industry Commission, Trade NZ and Industry NZ will be proudly presenting New Zealand Sounds 'A Tour Of New Zealand In Music', and are yet again involved in the logistics of putting the show together.
Summer Stage is New York's premier multicultural performing arts festival and celebrates the eclectic nature of New York City and the cultural diversity of the world by presenting some of the finest musicians, dancers and word artists from around the globle.
The New Zealand Sounds event at Summer Stage is a direct result of the World Series showcases held in Auckland late last year. One of the delegates, Rick Arnstein from GMR Marketing, returned to New York and encouraged the Summer Stage organisers to include New Zealand in the festival line up.
"Central Park Summer Stage has earned a global reputation for its programming," says Cath Andersen, Executive Director of the NZ Music Industry Commission "and we are really excited about seeing New Zealand Music become part of that programme".
Other artists of note to appear during the 2003 season of Summer Stage include The White Stripes, Wilco, Sonic Youth, Elvis Costello & The Imposters and De La Soul.
The audience at the event is estimated to be upwards of 30,000 and should be a great opportunity for the acts involved to up their profile in a city that a) has a population several times larger than that of New Zealand, and b) is the home to several top major and indie labels.
