The student radio station at the University of Waikato, Contact FM, is proud to be taking part in ShakeOut, the first nationwide earthquake drill.
Contact FM is working with the University of Waikato in getting Hamilton prepared for the potential of an earthquake. The station will be playing the messages that the University of Waikato plays across their emergency broadcast system, so listeners can get involved too.
Contact FM’s ShakeOut Co-ordinator, Daniel Farrell, said, “Contact FM is proud to be involved with the community, and as such, we believe that we should be helping the community with something as important as preparing for an emergency. No one expected the earthquakes in Canterbury, so even though there’s a low risk of earthquakes in Hamilton, it’s always a good idea to be prepared.”
The station will broadcast a message informing listeners that the drill is about to occur at 8:40am and 9:15am. There will then be the ‘sting’ provided by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management and a message informing listeners of what is happening at 9:26am.
ShakeOut is a nationwide earthquake drill being run by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management on Wednesday, 26 September 2012 at 9:26am. For more information about ShakeOut, you can visit http://www.getthru.govt.nz/.
