Top New Zealand bands follow The Beatles musical footsteps on UK tour

25 September 2012 - 0 Comments

Christchurch rockers Sleeping Dogs have created the musical ‘dream team’ with Wellington rock/pop four-piece Supermodel.

Following the success of their New Zealand Live DVD tour earlier this year the bands have set their sights on the international stage. They’ve scored the same luxury Starcruiser tour bus as Kings of Leon, booked The Beatles former stomping-ground The Cavern Club for a show in Liverpool, and composed brand new material for their international tour to London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Leeds and Paris.

Sleeping Dogs is the creation of Thomas Reid; an eccentric, classically trained pianist and self-confessed Bowie addict. Their songs have been described as “unavoidable, deep and unapologetic” and “extravagant, big, epic and over-the-top”. They are a passionate music fans’ band with edge.

Across the Cook Strait, pop-rock quartet Supermodel released their highly anticipated UK-produced debut album To the Mountains last year with the NZ Herald calling it a “mover and shaker of a release”.  The album went to No. 1 in the iTunes charts (rock category) on the first day of release, entered the IMNZ charts at number four, and made The Official RIANZ Top 40 Album Chart.

Both bands write songs that advertise the power of strong melodic writing. Supermodel add colourful vocal harmonies that meld effectively with their intelligent arrangements and catchy choruses influenced by the likes of The Beatles, Queen, and The Strokes.

With Bowie on their side, Sleeping Dogs unique melodic style speaks volumes on stage. Belting out sincere personal sentiments from his grand piano, songwriter Thomas has honed his crafty gift of composition to a whole new level in their soon-to-be-releasedsophomore record Death of a Muse. Recorded at York St Studio in Auckland and mixed at Modern World Studios in the UK, with respected producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers) and engineer Clint Murphy, these songs form the guts of their impending UK tour.

Together, the veteran musicians present a tight live package with a healthy touring resume. Last year, Sleeping Dogs embarked on a 40+ national tour following the release of their debut album Myth Reducer and Supermodel has toured the country for years, performing at Rhythm 'n Vines, Homegrown and the historic 100 Club in London. Their return to England’s capital was imminent after a riveting, packed 100 Club show.

This time, they’ve taken their UK experience one step further and made friends with another ambitious Kiwi outfit for this whirlwind autumn tour.

New Zealand music has never sounded this good.
