Music News - New Music Video For Ariana Tikao

New Music Video For Ariana Tikao

11 October 2012 - 0 Comments

Wellington based singer Ariana Tikao releases her music video this week for the single, ‘Te Heke’ from her forthcoming album ‘From Dust to Light’. Created by Auckland video artist Louise Potiki Bryant, ‘Te Heke’ celebrates whakapapa.  Potiki Bryant and Tikao are both descendants of the South Island iwi of Kai Tahu and both artists use themes from their tribal culture and traditions in their work.

Potiki Bryant and Tikao worked together previously on a video from the title track of Tikao’s last album ‘Tuia’, winning them Best Music Video award at the 2009 imagiNATIVE film + video awards in Canada. Potiki Bryant has also created visuals for Tikao’s live shows.

The video for ‘Te Heke’ uses layers of imagery and was filmed at Tikao’s marae, Onuku, near Akaroa.  It presents images of taonga, of Tikao and her whanau, and showcases the stunning landscape of Banks Peninsula.

“I loved working on the video for ‘Te Heke’, particularly the experience of holding the taonga made by my tipuna that we borrowed from the Canterbury Museum”, said Tikao. “Also seeing my whanau in the video emphasises the importance of whakapapa which is at the essence of the song’s kaupapa”.

‘Te Heke’ was initially used for a film soundtrack for the documentary ‘The Unnatural History of the Kakapo’, and was co-written with Leyton, who produced Ariana's last solo album 'Tuia'

'From Dust to Light' is due for release on the 16th November. Tikao will perform a pre-release show at Te Papa on November 3rd.  Further release shows will take place in Melbourne and Christchurch later in November.
