Six60 and Kimbra have dominated at the 2012 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.
Six60 takes home an impressive six Tuis for the mantelpiece including Vodafone Single of the Year and FOUR Best Group. Kimbra tops off a phenomenally successful year with five Tui wins.
Auckland-based Six60 also wins Tuis for Highest Selling NZ Single and NZ On Air Radio Airplay of the Year for its double platinum single ‘Don’t Forget Your Roots’, which this week celebrates 52 consecutive weeks in the New Zealand Singles Chart.
The band’s self-titled debut album “Six60” is also the nation’s Highest Selling for the year, achieving triple platinum status.
To top off an impressive haul, Six60 confirms its popularity by winning the coveted Vodafone People’s Choice Award.
In addition to her Album of the Year award for debut album “Vows”, Kimbra adds Tuis to her ever-expanding trophy cabinet for Best Female Solo Artist, Westpac Hotpoints Breakthrough Artist of the Year and The Edge Best Pop Album.
The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter also wins a Tui for International Achievement for “Vows”. The album reached Platinum status in Australia and debuted at number 14 on the US Billboard Chart.
The Naked and Famous also receive an International Achievement Award acknowledging the success of the group’s 2011 Tui-winning single “Young Blood” at last year’s VNZMA. It also celebrates the global distribution of their debut album “Passive Me, Aggressive You”.
Best Male Solo Artist for 2012 goes to Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Oregon-based Ruban Nielson previously of The Mint Chicks – for his self-titled debut album.
The awards have been presented tonight (Nov. 1) at Auckland’s Vector Arena.
Guests at the packed and vibrant venue enjoyed live performances by Kimbra, Gin Wigmore, Six60, Home Brew, The Black Seeds and Annah Mac. There was also a special tribute to this year's Legacy Award recipient Toy Love by Don’t Ask Me, which features members of the Rackets, Street Chant and Tiny Ruins.
Presenters at the star-studded event included international guests Mumford & Sons and Ben Harper as well as home-grown talent and celebs Karl Urban, Taika Waititi, Dominic Bowden and Jaime Ridge, who paired with Tame from “The GC”.

- Best Māori Album – Ria Hall, “Ria Hall”
- Best Gospel / Christian Album – Parachute Band, “Matins:Vespers”
- KBB Music Best Classical Album – Christopher Blake, “Angel at Ahipara”
- NZ On Air Best Music Video – Special Problems, “The Sun” (The Naked and Famous)
- International Achievement Awards – Kimbra and The Naked and Famous

- Best Jazz Album – Rodger Fox’s Wellington Jazz Orchestra, “Journey Home”
- Best Folk Album – Amiria Grenell, “Three Feathers”
- Best Pacific Music Album – Kas Futialo (aka Tha Feelstyle), “Good Morning Samoa”
- Best Country Music Album – Tami Nelson, “The Kitchen Table Sessions Vol II”
- Best Album Cover – Angela Keoghan for “Dearly Departed” (Bannerman)
- MAINZ Best Engineer – Neil Baldock for “Me & Moon” (Lydia Cole)
- MAINZ Best Producer – Kody Nielson for “Belle” (Bic Runga)
Recording Industry Association of New Zealand Managing Director Chris Caddick says, “Sincere congratulations to tonight’s winners, virtually all of whom took home their first Tuis tonight.
“It’s exciting to see a new generation of New Zealand artists connecting so strongly with Kiwi music fans and tonight’s event demonstrates that New Zealand music is continuing to flourish.”
