Music News - Kiwi Band Makes Its Mark On Top 40 Charts

17 December 2012 - 0 Comments

Continuing their reign from 2011, local act Six60 claims the #5 spot for Best Selling Album in 2012 and the #1 spot for biggest-selling local act. After setting numerous records last year, Adele has once again claimed the title for Best Selling Album in 2012.

Adele’s ‘21’ was the year’s longest running #1 album, claiming the prestigious title for a total of 12 weeks and charting for 48 weeks. The album has also set a new longevity record of 38 (non-consecutive) weeks at #1, across 2011 and 2012 combined.

It wasn’t just a one woman show though; this year’s charts welcomed in the return of the boy band.

British sensation One Direction and their debut set ‘Up All Night’ registered for a second year on The Chart, making #1 for three weeks and taking out the #2 spot for bestselling album in 2012. Their second album ‘Take Me Home’ also opened at #1, giving the act two #1 sets in a calendar year.

Locally, The Edge embraced the boy band trend forming the pop group Titanium. Proving to be no one-hit-wonder, the boys claimed a local #1 single with ‘Come On Home’ and logged two other chart hits with ‘I Won’t Give Up’ and ‘Sky’.

Top Selling Singles

It was a year for newcomers on the Singles Chart. Carly Rae Jepsen took out the #1 spot with her debut hit ‘Call Me Maybe’ which spent five weeks at #1 and remained on the charts for an impressive 32 weeks. YouTube K-pop sensation PSY rocketed to success and the #2 spot with ‘Gangnam Style’.

The biggest singles of 2012 proved they had staying power with 15 of the year’s Top 50 singles charting for 20 weeks or longer and six logging six months or more. Gotye, featuring New Zealand’s own Kimbra, recently re-joined the 2012 charts with ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, pushing its total number of weeks on The Chart to 36.

Locally, Flight of the Conchords had a successful sweep of the charts with the Cure Kids hit “Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)”. The charitable ballad set digital sales records, selling Platinum in just two days and was the top-selling local single for 2012, sitting at #1 on the Singles Charts for two weeks.

Kiwi Acts

While Adele may have led the Charts, Kiwi acts Six60, Gin Wigmore and Peter Posa all made their mark, claiming three of the Top 20 Best Selling Album slots for 2012.

Peter Posa returned to the charts with his album ‘White Rabbit: The Very Best Of Peter Posa’. This saw him claim the #1 album spot for six weeks, making his the second longest-running #1 album of 2012.

Two other local albums also made #1 during the year. The Black Seeds gained their second #1 album with ‘Dust And Dirt’ and local hip-hop crew Home Brew debuted at #1 with their self-titled album.

There is no denying the continuing success of Dunedin-formed Six60. Locally the group claimed a 25 per cent share of the Kiwi Singles Chart, with an impressive five Top 20 singles: “Only To Be” (#4), “Forever” (#5), “Don't Forget Your Roots” (#7), “Lost” (#17) and “Rise Up 2.0” (#18).

In addition to dominating the local charts, the ex-student group also claimed two Top 50 spots on the Best Selling Singles Chart.

RIANZ chart manager Phil Matcham says Kiwi success on the charts provides an encouraging boost for local artists.

“The introduction of the New Zealand Artist Top 20 singles and album charts has given us a chance to highlight the diversity and success of Kiwi music,” says Phil. “Even with many acts crossing over to the main Top 40 Charts, the New Zealand Top 20 remains a true celebration of the variety and talent we have in our country.”
