After a years hiatus, Gypsy Fever is back for some knees-up summer shenanigans around festivals and venues of New Zealand. The headline act is once again nine piece Wellington Balkan brass band Niko Ne Zna, who have just released their highly anticipated debut album, Renegade Brass Bandits. Join them and DJ Balkanetic plus special guests this weekend for what is bound to be 2 wild intoxicating nights of celebration, dazzling musicianship and dancing, dancing, dancing.
Niko Ne Zna are a world class act with exotic tunes, fantastic grooves and exciting solos. With a line-up comprising two trumpets, saxophone, vocals, accordion, trombone, sousaphone, percussion, Balkan bass drum and snare drum, they are a truly authentic ensemble. They can roam while playing, and enchant the audience into dancing, singing, clapping and stomping all night long. The band consists of some of Wellington’s finest instrumentalists who come from a wide array of musical backgrounds that unite together to produce an intoxicating cocktail that will make your ears rise to attention and your feet move in a frenzy. Niko Ne Zna's selection of traditional and original tunes is high energy with dark undertones and sexy gypsy style.
Since their inception 6 years ago, the band has played extensively around New Zealand with two national tours and performances at The Wellington Fringe Festival, International Jazz Festival, Cuba Street Carnival, Wellington Summer City Festival, Prana Festival and Taranaki Arts Festival to name but a few.
Joining them on the road will be Berlin-based DJ Balkanetic, champion of all things balkan and veteran of four other Gypsy Fever tours who will be bringing back a bag of fresh balkan/gypsy tunes and cutting edge globaltronica from his travels in the old countries.
Special guests at the Auckland and Leigh shows are Gypsy Fever favourites The Jews Brothers and Club Manouche.
This tour also marks the release of the first ever limited edition (300 copies) Gypsy Fever compilation CD compiled by DJ Balkanetic featuring 12 of the best gypsy/balkan bands in Australia and New Zealand.
