Sharon Crosbie to Leave Radio New Zealand

The Chairman of the Radio New Zealand Board of Directors, Brian Corban, announced today that Sharon Crosbie, has advised him of her decision to leave her position as Chief Executive and Editor in Chief of Radio New Zealand at the end of December 2003.

In making the announcement, Mr Corban acknowledged Sharon Crosbie's contribution to public broadcasting during her eight years as Radio New Zealand Chief Executive and Editor in Chief.

"Public broadcasting in New Zealand has a long and proud tradition, it is part of our national heritage. There have been outstanding contributions from many fine broadcasters over the years and Sharon Crosbie stands with the best of them. Eight years is a long time as a Chief Executive of any company and in her time at the helm of Radio New Zealand she has made a significant contribution to the heritage of public broadcasting in this country.

"Sharon has chosen to depart in December and leaves the company in good heart at a time when there is an obvious revival in government support for public broadcasting, a new funding agreement, and a very positive conclusion to the recent wage round. Radio New Zealand has an excellent future as it moves into the twenty-first century."

Mr Corban said Radio New Zealand will immediately begin the process of seeking and appointing a new Chief Executive and Editor in Chief.

"The company will undertake a normal search and recruitment exercise for a senior appointment of this nature, always recognising the importance of Radio New Zealand to New Zealanders.

The search will be conducted both within New Zealand and offshore."
