Wellington has missed out on another major concert as promoters continue to have difficulties with venues. An overseas band had been pencilled in to play at the Queens Wharf Event Centre in mid-October but that is now off because of problems between the promoter and the venue.
Promoter Manolo Echave would not say who the band was but the main contenders appear to be The Dixie Chicks, Marilyn Manson, or KD lang and Tony Bennett who are all due to play in Australia about the same time.
The concert is the sixth big one the capital has lost out on in the past year.
Coldplay just played Auckland last week, Bruce Springsteen played in Auckland in March, and Santana was in Auckland and New Plymouth the same month. Last year, Sir Cliff Richard played concerts in Auckland, Hawke's Bay and Christchurch, and both The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Canada's Bryan Adams played in Auckland and Christchurch last year.
Mr Echave said yesterday that the Queens Wharf centre was inflexible and it did not make economic sense for him to bring the band to the Capital. "It's a ridiculous thing."
The centre wanted to only sell tickets through Ticketek but he wanted tickets to be sold through an online agency, he said. Centre managers had refused to change their stance, saying that it had a contract with Ticketek. But Mr Echave said the centre hosted a Super 12 rugby party earlier this year which did not require Ticketek involvement.
"It's nonsensical; every other centre in New Zealand is very flexible on the terms that are put together . . .
Wellington is totally inflexible. It's better for us to stay away because there are better places for us to go. . . . I'm very sorry for the punters." The band will play Auckland and possibly Christchurch or add another Australian concert.
Centre manager Megan O'Toole said it was difficult to comment on whether the centre could be more flexible about its ticketing arrangements.
