NZ On Air spreads a bit more love this week with the first round of music funding for the 2003/04 financial year.
With music TV likely to be a focal point later in the year, the broadcasting agency have managed to squeeze an increase in the budget for music videos out of the government coffers. This year 120 projects will be funded, at $5000 each, compared with the 110 in last year’s budget.
Of the 89 applications this quarter, 21 were chosen. They are:
- 'I Hear You Call My Name' - Gasoline Cowboy (Arch Hill)
- 'Brothaz' - Nesian Mystik (Bounce/Universal)
- 'Don't Tell Me' - Concord Dawn (Kog/Universal)
- 'My Lady' - Mareko (Dawn Raid/Universal)
- 'So Nice' - Scribe (Dirty/FMR)
- 'Not So Cold' - Carly Binding (FMR)
- 'Stomping' - King Kapisi (FMR)
- 'Natural' - PanAm (Flying Nun/FMR)
- 'Century Sky' - Emma Paki (Heart/BMG)
- 'Don't Go Losing' - Dianne Swann (Independent)
- 'Lay It Down' - Baitercell (Kog/Universal)
- 'Move Over' - Betchadupa (Liberation)
- 'Colour Me' - Katchafire (Mai/Shock)
- 'I'll Go' - Taisha (Manawa)
- '2 Can' - Jorge & The Woodcut Crew (Offcut)
- 'The Be All & End All' - Bic Runga (Sony Music)
- 'Menace' - Minuit (Tardus/Universal)
- 'Going Downtown' - Augustino (Taylortalk/Sony Music)
- 'New Stepper' - Salmonella Dub (Virgin/EMI)
- 'Gotta Hold On' - Evermore (WEA/Warner)
- 'Weapons Of War' - The Feelers (WEA/Warner).
From a mailbacg of 143 applications, nine Phase Four New Recording projects will receive $5000 each:
- 'Debbie' - 48May (Independent)
- 'This Is How We Do It' - Beetrootz (KLR Music)
- 'By My Side' - Centreshift (Independent)
- 'Loner' - Goodnight Nurse (Independent)
- 'Overcoat' - Cliff Hedley (Independent)
- 'Represent The Homeland' - No Artificial Flavours (Machaventa)
- 'In My Dreams' - Polly Prior (Independent)
- 'Inside' - Sommerset (Kafuey)
- 'Simple Days' - Stardrunk (Independent)
Another five Radio Hits rebates of $5000 for songs that picked up significant airplay on commercial radio in the second quarter of 2003, but had not been previously funded by NZ On Air, were made. They are:
- 'Dancehall Girl' - Salmonella Dub (Virgin/EMI)
- 'Love Remains' - Amber Claire (Sony Music)
- 'For The Ladies' - Dubious Bros (Mai/Shock)
- 'Oil & Water' - Evermore (WEA/Warner)
- 'Verona' - Elemeno P (Universal).
