The Business of Independent Label Management Pilot Program is now calling for Applications from Australia & New Zealand.
RELEASE, the dynamic new five stage program designed to assist independent label owners from Australia and New Zealand grow their businesses, is now calling for applications. Independent label owners from both sides of the Tasman are encouraged to apply.
The program is presented by the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN), and supported by Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) and Independent Music New Zealand (IMNZ). Funding has been provided by the Australian Government and the New Zealand Music Commission.
RELEASE will incorporate two residential labs to be held near Sydney, the first from 26-29 November 2013. Music industry advocate and lawyer, David Vodicka, will MC the first residential lab, working with a number of music and business advisers including Sebastian Chase, Colin Daniels and Nicole Duckworth.
RELEASE will provide participants with practical business guidance. It will include a comprehensive review of the different business models found in the contemporary music sector, as well as deep analysis of each business model brought to the lab. It’s based on the very successful CONTROL program which has been running for music managers since 2008.
“We’re delighted that RELEASE has been funded,” said Denise Foley, Chair, AMIN. “It’s a vote of confidence in the industry, and in the great impact that CONTROL has had. Alumni report that it’s not only changed their businesses for the better, but their lives as well.”
“CONTROL improved my skill base. Learning more about business practice really changed my working world, not to mention my outlook on work/life balance. There’s no question label owners will benefit from RELEASE” added Catherine Haridy (Manager of Eskimo Joe, Adalita, Bob Evans/Jebediah, Tigertown), Chair, Association of Artist Managers.
RELEASE application forms and guidelines are available from the AMIN, AIR and IMNZ websites:

"It's no secret that running an independent label that achieves both artistic and economic success is incredibly difficult today. That's why AIR is very excited about the inaugural RELEASE program. This initiative represents a wonderful opportunity for labels to develop and improve their business practices,” said Nick O’Byrne, General Manager, AIR.
"We are very happy to be providing business support and offering professional development for our members in these modern music times, and further strengthening our ties with our Australian compatriots with this initiative," said Dylan Pellett, Business Development Manager, IMNZ.
Applications close 23 September 2013.
