Music News - The Doqument And Surf City Collide For Unique Track

17 October 2013 - 0 Comments

NZ acts join forces to create an exclusive track as part of new adidas Originals campaign.

Following in the footsteps of this year’s legendary collaboration between hip hop artist Run DMC and superstar DJ A-Trak, adidas has brought together six unique Australian and New Zealand artists to produce three exclusive tracks.

The second of three collaborations see Kiwi artists The Doqument and Surf City joining forces on a track due to be released Thursday, 17th October. Entitled Dice, the trackcombines the laid-back, psychedelic vibes of indie rock band Surf City with the philosophical lyrics of urban rap group The Doqument for what is truly “a clash of the genres”.

Eager to push boundaries and co-create a track that challenges traditional genres, the musicians were holed up in a West Coast studio over two days, where they spent their time collaborating, discussing bass lines and throwing around ideas against the remote rural backdrop.

With both parties bringing such diverse musical talents to the table, creative differences were an inevitable and essential part of the journey. [It was] “really interesting blending the rules of hip-hop with the rules of indie guitar pop”, says sound engineer Chris Chetland.

When it was agreed that hip-hop would form the basis of the track, beat maker "Shaqles" of The Doqument went away and composed the skeleton of the beat. Then “after a bit of back and forth, we put our heads down and came back with something truly unique”, says $ikeOne. “Once we reached a common ground on beat selection and melody, the track pretty much wrote itself.”

The track’s themes and the song title, Dice were inspired by a game Surf City spent a lot of time playing when on the road touring. The Doqument’s lyrics speak of being the master of your own fate in the face of adversity, and are punctuated by the distinctively melancholic sounds of Surf City’s choruses which refer to chance and the ‘rolling of the dice’.

Dice will be available for free download from October 17, with the behind-the-scenes video live on October 22, as outlined below.

Key timings:

- Teaser video live: Tuesday, October 15

- Dice audio track release: Thursday, October 17

- Behind-the-scenes video release: Tuesday, October 22

The Surf City and The Doqument collision follows on from the Jonti and Big Scary (Australia) collision with final collision of Client Liaison and World’s End Press (Australia) due to go live from October 29.

About The Doqument

The Doqument team consists of $ikeOne (MC), imaGe (MC), Shaqles (Producer/MC), and just recently, Mac Major (DJ). Although they've only been together for less than a year, The Doqument have asserted and projected nothing but quality and authenticity to their style. In their time together, they’ve showcased world-class lyrical ability layered confidently on supreme nostalgic beats produced by Shaqles. The 'hustle' & hard working ethic is what sets The Doqument apart from many local Rap groups, as they are very much their production team to which they produce and master their own music, along with filming and editing their own music videos. That work ethic carries over into their productivity, having produced four hit records accompanied by four music videos, all in the space of four months. For the immediate time being, The Doqument will continue to assert themselves and their quality music into the NZ Music Industry. In addition, they will be working on their live show, which they will look to bring to their fans and a concert venue very soon. Moreover, there are plans to extend and expand their listener base to a global audience, which they hope will project them towards their dream of one day producing, touring and performing on the global scene.

About Surf City

Formed in 2004 in Auckland, Surf City quickly formed a name for themselves as a "band to watch." This attention quickly spread overseas, with the band being flagged by music website Stereogum as a "jangling, up-tempo but melancholic form of shoegaze pop."

Their recent album, We Knew It Was Not Going To Be Like This continues their love affair with psychedelic, reverb-swathed guitar pop, drawing from their Flying Nun forefathers The Clean and The Chills, as well as the fuzzed-up dream pop of The Jesus and Mary Chain and the loopy noise of Animal Collective. It's out now on Arch Hill.
