There’s a new sound on the airwaves this summer as Taupo and Rotorua three-piece, A Bit Nigel, launch their first single and music video.
We Slept Over captures the essence of the 2013 Smokefreerockquest winners, according to spokesman Matt Ealand.
“I’m really impressed with the quality of their sound and with the style of the video,” he said. “It’s a classic summer anthem…about being young, having fun and there’s just an edge of the ‘bad-boy’.”
A Bit Nigel are Hamish Nixon, lead vocals, guitar and synth; Sam Marshall vocals, bass, synth; and Manawa Veitayaki, drums and backing vocals.
Hamish says making the single and video was a lot harder than they expected.
“It was a three day shoot and we worked until 4am three nights in a row, but even though it was long hours we had a lot of laughs,” he said. “Really while we’ve been making the video and recording the singel, we’ve been treated like rock stars – it’s been amazing.”
A Bit Nigel have some gigs around Rotorua and Taupo over summer and will be heading to Auckland in 2014 for study, work and to keep on making music together.
The single and video shoot by Candlelight Pictures were part of the $10,000 SFRQ prize, which also includes video play on youth music channel FOUR and the inclusion of the single on the current NZ On Air Hit Disc, which goes to all radio stations in New Zealand.
If the comment from SFRQ judge and Edge Assistant PD Clint Roberts is anything to go by, radio stations will be putting it on high rotate:
“I think A Bit Nigel has real potential to be New Zealand’s next big thing - they’re a young band with a fresh sound, they’ve got originality, they’ve got swagger, musicality, and they are at home on the stage,” he said. “The lead singer has an effortless interaction with the crowd and they look set to make it commercially in the music industry.”
