AUCKLAND BIG DAY OUT WIDENS THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE
WITH ART INITIATIVES AND A LIVE MAGAZINE

The Auckland Big Day Out today announced three of its new initiatives for the 17 January 2014 event at Western Springs.

The three elements see the Big Day Out taking a fresh approach to the festival environment as it teams up with Art In the Dark, Metro Magazine and a selection of talented local visual artists.

“We were determined to bring something unique and distinctly local to the Big Day Out’s return to New Zealand,” says Auckland event promoter Campbell Smith.

“It is not just about having the best NZ music artists on the line-up. We wanted to ensure that the Big Day Out would have a broader kiwi flavour, joining our exciting local gastronomic experience, Chowtown.”

From the Art In the Dark curated Art Trail to a striking new take on rubbish collection and Metro’s pop-up ‘live magazine’, there will be more to see, hear and enjoy at the 2014 Auckland Big Day Out than ever before.

Art in the Dark presents The Art Trail at Big Day Out

Big Day Out is thrilled to have teamed up with Celery Productions, the producers of Auckland’s Art in the Dark, to curate and present the Art Trail at the Big Day Out 2014. Western Springs is a unique canvas for Celia Harrison and Ella Mizrahi to install a series of eye-popping installation artworks, light works and special effects for our audience. Art in the Dark has become a highlight of the Auckland event calendar, attracting crowds of over 50,000 to experience and be amazed by two nights of innovative use of light, dark and sound in contemporary art. We are very much looking forward to bringing their incredible vision to the 2014 Big Day Out.

Metro Live Magazine at Big Day Out

In an exclusive and innovative BDO first, Metro magazine will present a live magazine at the Auckland Big Day Out 2014. The "issue" will be curated by Metro editor Simon Wilson and presented on stage and screen in the Metro Cube, in a repeating rolling programme between 11.30am and 5pm. Highlights will include: micro-debates by top Metro writers on hot Auckland topics; a constantly updated photo display of people in the BDO crowd in the style of Metro’s On the Town society pages; live musical interludes; Insider Advice – 20 top tips every Aucklander needs to know; a display of Metro's best portrait photography and shots of Auckland; 20 Questions – read the magazine’s, specially conceived for BDO, add your own and vote for the best; movie magic – see New Zealand's best new short films.... and much, much more.

At the conclusion of the final issue at 5pm, the Metro Cube will become a BDO music stage and each of the interlude artists will perform full sets until 10pm.

The Cube performers will be:

Art Trash at Big Day Out

Recycling at this year's Big Day Out takes a twist with a series of 240 litre wheelie bins tricked out in original artwork by New Zealand's hottest street artists. Eight leading artists are each using a bin as their canvas in an exclusive BDO art project. Askew One, Lil Elz, Misery, Gary Silipa, OD, BMD, Mica Still and Benjamin Work are the artists in question. If that wasn’t cool enough, we'll also run a competition via George FM and Kiwi FM which will give 8 budding artists a chance to join the Big Day Out Rubbish Art Crew and paint their own bins. All sixteen bins will be on display at BDO, and then following the 17 January event at Western Springs, they will each go up for auction with proceeds going to the New Zealand Music Foundation.
