Lizzie Marvelly’s second pop single, My Own Hero, will be released on iTunes on April 11. Co-written with Dan Gillespie Sells and Richard Jones of Brit-award nominated and Ivor Novello award-winning English pop-rock band The Feeling, and produced by Australian hit-maker Lindsay Rimes, My Own Hero is a dark, driving pop track that provides contrast to her first single, Generation Young.
Marvelly says My Own Hero is an emphatic refusal to subscribe to the damsel-in-distress paradigm. With its sweeping synths and power guitar licks it is reminiscent of the brand of girl-power that emerged in the eighties and early nineties, influenced by artists like Blondie and Madonna.
"'I wrote My Own Hero while travelling last year. I found myself on the other side of the world and I was able to gain some much-needed perspective. I felt really empowered for the first time in a long time and when I went into the studio with Rich and Dan, My Own Hero just emerged from the ashes really.”
“As a young girl I think I'd always been under this misguided impression that I needed a guy to be my ‘knight in shining armour’. The idea of a guy being this all-powerful rescuing figure is actually quite condescending really. I don't want a man to rescue me and treat me like some sort of damsel, I want a man to be my best friend and treat me with respect. I think that loving yourself and being your own hero has to come first.”
Marvelly’s single My Own Hero is now available on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-own-hero-single/id848546901?uo=4&at=10lrHH following on from her promising debut, Generation Young, which spent five weeks in the Radioscope New Zealand Music Top 40 charts. Generation Young was also a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition, an impressive feat for the young writer's debut. Her third studio album, her writer’s debut, is expected in June 2014.
